Sunrisers Hyderabad (SRH) captain Pat Cummins has indicated that he could miss next year’s IPL in order to manage his workload ahead of a hectic 2027 schedule, which includes the ODI World Cup and a possible World Test Championship (WTC) final.
As captain of Australia’s Test and ODI sides, Cummins is expected to prioritise international cricket over franchise commitments. Aware of his importance to the national team, Cricket Australia managed his workload carefully last summer. The Australian skipper featured only in the Adelaide Test of the Ashes series due to a back issue that also ruled him out of the T20 World Cup.
His recovery took longer than expected, delaying his return to competitive cricket. As a result, SRH were without their captain for half of the IPL season. However, upon his return, Cummins made an immediate impact, claiming eight wickets in as many matches.
Cummins said he would make a decision on his availability closer to the tournament and would consult with the franchise before reaching a final call.
“Something has got to give at some stage next year and it’s not going to be Test matches or an ODI World Cup,” Cummins told the Sydney Morning Herald on Wednesday. “I will make a call a lot closer and work with the franchise to see what makes sense. Things can change. I’ve had a couple of injuries pop up, so I don’t really want to lock in anything.”
Australia’s schedule is packed, beginning with a two-Test series against Bangladesh, followed by white-ball matches against England, a Test series against New Zealand and an away tour of India.
